North County Opener Preview: What to Watch

The 2027 San Diego Affiliate Cup season officially begins April 17 at CrossFit Encinitas. The North County Opener has quickly become one of the most-anticipated events on the local calendar — a chance for gyms to set the tone early and for athletes to announce themselves before the season gets fully underway.

The Format

This year's Opener features three team workouts across a single day. Teams of four (two male, two female) will cycle through a series of tests designed to reward both strength and conditioning depth. Expect a heavy barbell piece, a gymnastics-intensive couplet, and a final chipper that will sort teams by engine.

Gyms to Watch

CrossFit Oceanside returns after a strong 2026 season and enters as the default favorite in North County. Their competition team has trained hard over the winter and they've added several strong athletes to their roster.

CrossFit Encinitas is hosting this year and will be competing on home turf. That matters. Head coach Sarah Chen has built a team that's deep enough to compete across all workouts.

Barrio CrossFit (Central SD) made the trip north in 2026 and finished in the top five. Expect them again. Miguel Fuentes anchors their team and is one of the best individual athletes in the county.

CrossFit Chula Vista is the team most people are sleeping on. Coach Carlos Ibarra quietly put together one of the best-prepared rosters in San Diego. Kayla Strom leads their female contingent.

Athletes to Watch

  • Jordan Calloway (CrossFit Oceanside) — podium finisher last year and hungry for a win
  • Priya Nair (CrossFit Encinitas) — returns after her Pairs Clash title with momentum
  • Kayla Strom (CrossFit Chula Vista) — strongest engine in the field

Bottom Line

The North County Opener sets the tone for the entire season. Get there early, know who you're watching, and expect the unexpected. Affiliate Cup points are real — and they start here.
