Murph in San Diego: Where to Find a Memorial Day WOD

Every Memorial Day, the functional fitness community gathers to honor Lt. Michael Murphy with the workout that carries his name. In San Diego, that means dozens of gyms throwing open their doors for community Murph events.

What Is Murph?

For the uninitiated: Murph is a Hero WOD consisting of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run — all done wearing a 20 lb vest (for those who choose to).

It's a benchmark of fitness, a test of grit, and a tribute to a fallen servicemember. It's also one of the most community-focused events on the CrossFit calendar.

Tips for Murph

  • Start slower than you think you need to
  • Break up the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats into manageable sets (e.g., 20 rounds of 5/10/15)
  • If you've never done Murph, go scaled — no vest, ring rows instead of pull-ups
  • Hydrate the night before
  • Show up. That's the most important part.

Check each gym's Instagram for final details closer to the date. And if your gym is hosting a Murph event and isn't on this list, submit it here.
